I'd recommend you to not be in a hurry to sail towards skellige. Take your time to explore Velen/Novigrad and try to find all places of power (hability points are always needed). I've beaten the game twice, now i'm on my third run and can't remember any quest that fails once you get to skellige.... read more ›

You can go to Skellige at about 5% of completion. The game is set up in a way for you to find Ciri by doing a bunch of different quests around all parts of the game world.
